John Freeman has created many images of the maritime history and present day nautical life of Whitby.

His studies, during the visits of the Australian replica of Captain Cook’s “HM Endeavour” have produced accurate and exciting images of this iconic ship. Cook’s other ships have also been featured, including John Freeman’s study of Cook’s supply ship “Discovery” leaving Whitby.

Fishing boats, cobles and busy harbour scenes feature in the collection, along with dramatic images of the piers, lighthouses and rugged cliffs swept by the North Sea, in its many moods.

John Freeman’s lifeboat studies depicting local historic events add a powerful dimension to the gallery of works he has created.

The Ship

The replica of Captain James Cook's famous ship H.M. Endeavour, in which he carried out so much important exploration of the Southern Hemisphere, is a loving recreation, built in Freemantle, Australia over a period of 6 years and completed in 1993. The original idea of the Australian National Maritime Museum, she took countless skilled man hours, millions of dollars and enormous dedication to complete. She is a beautiful ship worthy of all the efforts Australia made to create her.

The Artist

John Freeman has worked from his Market Place studio since 1969 and is primarily known as a landscape artist. However, the moving and memorable visit of H.M. Endeavour has inspired a series of studies of this beautiful ship in its spiritual home port.
