Darnholm Snow
Christmas Cards
This is a tiny hamlet nestling in the
deep valley of Eller Beck. Just a short walk from the main village
of Goathland it is a perfect family 'discovery'! Countless holidaying
families will have had picnics on the beck's banks whilst their
children fish in the shallow waters.
This study is based on the reminiscences
of one such family who visited sumer and winter and even recalled
the sight and sounds of the passing stream trains.
Like
many other parts of the North Yorkshire moors, it has in the past
been the home to industry. A fulling mill once occupied the valley
bottom, with the cloth it produced on the hillsides to be bleached
by the sun. Mining both coal and iron and agriculture also shaped
the valley. A further claim to fame is that the artist's beloved
springer "Spot" was born here.
