In this study John Freeman has captured
a scene he is fortunate to have from the foot of his garden.
It depicts a NYMR steam engine hauling its coaches
into Whitby round the last tight curve before the straight run
towards the station. The curve is dictated by the bank of the
River Esk which is still tidal at this point. Behind are the towering
arches of the old Whitby-Scarborough railway viaduct. This magnificent
feat of engineering, completed about 1882, as a real tour de force
in the use of the humble brick! Beyond the viaduct rises the spire
of Ruswarp Church. River and rail then continue their joint journey
up the Esk Valley into the distant hills of the North Yorks Moors.
