Daybreak, Whitby

The East side of Whitby town continues to delight artists and photographers as it has for a great many years. The cliff, cottages, church and abbey all come together to form an image that anyone visiting or living in the town will acknowledge as the image of Whitby.

John Freeman has painted this subject many times during his 40-plus years of working in Whitby.

In this study he has bathed the East side in the glow of the early morning light as the sun rises beyond the abbey ruins. The soft light of sunrise giving even more enchantment to a magical view, which stays in the mind of all who come to this town.

The combination of  detailed observation and subtle use of colour make this a delightful rendition of this much loved view.
