SS Rohilla Rescue 20x15

This image depicts the valiant rescue attempts made by the RNLI and the townspeople of Whitby when the hospital ship SS Rohilla struck Whitby rock and then ran aground on Saltwick Nab on Friday 30th October1914.  The crew was sailing from Lieth to Dunkirk transporting medical staff - including 5 nurses – to evacuate war wounded.  In total 229 people were on board.
