The Herring Feet, Whitby 14x10

This was a time when Whitby Harbour would be so full of fishing vessels chasing the Herring shoals that a person could cross the harbour using the decks of the boats.

These were mainly local and Scottish vessels but some ventured up from as far away as Cornwall.

The boats fished for the “Sliver Darlings” close into shore just after dark and by morning barrels of fish would be leaving by rail for the inland markets.
