Grand Turk, Whitby 14x10

The sight of tall ships’ masts rising from Whitby harbour is without doubt one of the most evocative sights to be seen in 21st century Whitby.  It echoes the scene over a century ago when the town and harbour would often be a veritable forest of masts and rigging.  Today the Turkish built Grand Turk, star of the Hornblower television series, and many other films, is a potent reminder of Whitby’s maritime past.

In this serene nocturne study John Freeman captures the ship at berth in the Dock End of Whitby Harbour.  Across the harbour stands Capt. Cook’s House and above that the ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Moonlight and lit windows create dancing reflections across the water whilst the smoke from the cottages drifts upwards in the still air. Signed Giclee` Print approx 14"x10"
