December Dusk, Goathland 20x15

In this study John Freeman has captured a beautiful winter sunset over the moorland village of Goathland.

In recent years it has become renowned for its part in the very successful Yorkshire Television series “Heartbeat”.Its appeal long pre-dates this recent popularity, meandering, as it does, for nearly a mile through the heart of the North Yokshire Moors. It offers a great base for exploration of the rolling, heather clad hills. At the eastern end of Goathland the North Yorks Moor Railway has a thriving station.Head up the village through its wide open, sheep cropped sward and just before the moors rise again you will find the Parish Church of St Mary, short and squat, built, you feel, to withstand the worst of the moorland weather.

The village has buildings from the 16th to the 20th century - cottages, farmsteads and Edwardian houses that are scattered along its High Street – a street so wide that a golf course once existed at this end of the village.
