Staithes was once home to quite an extensive fishing fleet of small Cobles which made use of the protection of Cowbar cliff and Staithes beck for safe refuge from the North Sea.
Although somewhat diminished, fishermen still work from the village.
This study of Staithes on a calm, moonlit night by John Freeman gives out a feeling of calmness and security away from the force of the North sea.
